DESCRIPTION: EPW - Swiss made top-grade tandem-winding minute repeater grande and petite sonnerie clockwatch retailed by M. J. Pack, Bombay & Paris, no maker's marking but ebauche is in the style of Louis Audemars, 8-day, 52mm, massive 18K yellow gold original HC with gold cuvette in addition to glazed mvt observation cover, relief engraving set against a stippled background to front and rear of equestrian scenes depicting horses jumping fences in traditional English fox hunting attire, bezel with levers for 'Silent - Strike' and 'Quarters - Hours,' white enamel SS dial, SW-shift-locking-LS, fully capped lever escapement, fully jeweled strike train down to hammers, 37J, gilt movement, s#81199 within case. Comes with fitted box. Gross weight of assembled watch 118.4 dwt (184.2 g). We believe the ebauche of this piece was likely executed by Louis Audemars, both due to the similarity of its tandem winding system to Audemars products and also due to the overall layout and design similarities to other known Audemars products (we have included image of pages 428 & 429 from the book 'Louis-Benjamin Audemars, His Life and Work' by Hartmut Zantke which illustrate a watch by Audemars of very similar design). The button of this example at the bezel's 34 minute position controls selection of grand and petite sonnerie. When set to 'hours' position, watch will automatically strike full hour and quarter count every 15 minutes. When set to 'quarters' position, watch will automatically strike the quarters every 15 minutes as well as striking the hour count on the hour. Note that the watch has a lock-out feature designed to prevent clockwatch chiming when watch is in the setting position with setting lever extended. Listening to such watches chime every 15 minutes is one of the most charming sounds to live and work around.
CONDITION: Mvt: GRO though regulator is currently shifted off its index, good striking function apart from the clockwatch mode sometimes striking 1/4 behind the correct time and occassionally skipping the first quarter, pleasant striking tone, minute repeat seems to operate reliably, repeat trip pulls toward 6, excellent-plus cosmetic mvt condition overall, some mild micro-fine scratches to central portion of winding wheels, slight ultra-fine scratch striations to repeater bridge likely from a light wiping, plates otherwise with excellent gilt finish; dial flawless in visible portion; near mint hands; case shows hardly any wear, small ding to upper rear evident as ripple to inner surface of lid but with negligible exterior visibility; tight bow, crown shows hardly any wear; good glass crystals; box has exterior wear and marks, closes with some resistance due to watch thickness.
ESTIMATE: $15000 - $20000

DESCRIPTION: EPW - John Ellicott, London, steel cylinder fusee with brass escape wheel, 51mm, 14K (tested) rose gold outer pair case and pendant, gilt brass inner case, white enamel dial, later gold hands, KWKS, cylinder escapement, gilt mvt with pierced and engraved foliate scrolled balance cock with large 4mm rose cut diamond endstone, gilt locking dustcap with signature and serial number repeated, s#8035 with matching number within inner case. Gross weight of assembled watch 73.6 dwt (114.5 g). This watch was likely produced during the period that the company was known as John Ellicott & Sons. Watch paper inside case states, 'Watch of Rev. (?) DeMill worn by Genl. Schuyler at Battle of Quebec. Genl. Montgomery fell into his arms cracking glass face.' A quick Wikipedia search reveals that, due to illness, Major General Philip Schuyler was not at the Revolutionary War Battle of Quebec on Dec. 31, 1775 when General Richard Montgomery was killed, so this is just a nice attempt at putting a positive spin on all the hairline cracks on this dial.
CONDITION: Mvt: GRO, excellent cosmetic mvt condition overall, bright gilt plates, some scratches where plates are pinned; many hls on dial, no chips or repairs; later, slightly mismatched hands; original outer case shows light wear, several scattered mild dents or dings, button latch good; original inner case shows medium wear with significant visible brass, no dents, evidence of old repair to hinge; bow pivots freely with play at pendant junction; good domed glass crystal.

Instructions for using our serial number look-up tables

This page contains INSTRUCTIONS for using the serial number look-up tables that are found on many of our watch company history pages. The example below uses information from the American Waltham Watch Company, but that is just an example. You should consult the serial number table for the specific brand of watch movement you are trying to date by selecting a company from the menu on the left.

Not all vintage watches can be dated using the serial number. Some American watch brands did not use a consistent series of serial numbers, but most of the big manufacturers did. Most vintage Swiss pocket watches did NOT have serial numbers and can't be dated by this method.

Can't find YOUR exact serial number in our lookup tables?

Jules Jurgensen Serial Number List

Many watch companies made hundreds of thousands of watches, and some companies made millions of watches! It would be impractical to list the individual serial numbers of EVERY watch made... that would make some really long pages! Our serial number tables list RANGES of serial numbers. So to determine when your watch was manufactured, you will need to find where your serial number fits within the range of numbers.

Serial number look-up example:

Let's say you have a Waltham watch with serial number 21,607,210 as shown in the photo below. Note that we're using the serial number from the watch movement, not from the watch case. Looking at the table of Waltham serial numbers (see example below), you can see that number 20,900,000 was made in 1917 and 21,800,000 was made in 1918 (marked in red in the table below). Since your serial number falls between those two numbers, you know that your watch was made in 1917 or 1918.

Not sure which serial number to use?

You must use the serial number from the MOVEMENT of the watch... the working part with the wheels and gears... not the serial number from the watch case. Cases and watches were often made by different companies and each usually has its own serial number. You usually have to take the back off the watch case to see the movement serial number which may appear anywhere on the watch movement.

Jules Jurgensen Serial Numbers

Use the movement serial number. Do NOT use the case serial number!
This is an example only. Your movement serial number may not be in exactly the same location as the one in the photo, but you are looking for the serial number that is on the watch mechanism itself... not the serial number on the external case.

This is an example using the Waltham serial number table. Be sure to use the table that is specific
to YOUR brand of watch when looking up your serial number.

Be sure to use the serial number on the watch movement (the mechanism).
Do not use the serial number from the watch case.
