All Kenton County Drivers License will be closed Monday May 31st in honor of Memorial Day.

The Kentucky Department of Transportation Regional Office, where REAL ID compliant licenses are issued, has moved! The new office address is 6159 1st Financial Drive Burlington, KY 41005. Call 502-564-1257 with any questions. You should make an appointment and check requirements at www.drive.ky.gov. The Dept of Homeland Security has extended the enforcement date for domestic travel/military bases until May 3, 2023.

Both the Independence and Covington Drivers License offices are now open by appointment only. We continue to face a backlog of license issuance so there may be some delays.

Anyone who has a license/permit/State ID that expired or will expire between March 1, 2020 and June 30, 2021 AND anyone who has lost their license or had it stolen and whose address and name remains the same MUST renew/obtain their license by mail. You MUST fill out

and return it by mail or drop off in person to 1655 Delaware Crossing, Independence, KY 41051 or the Sheriff’s drop box at the Kenton County Administration Building 1840 Simon Kenton Way Covington, Kentucky 41011, along with payment (check- preferred-made payable to John C. Middleton, Circuit Clerk, money order) or debit/credit card (fee) (you must provide the required information or we will not process your application). We no longer accept cash for mail-ins. Paying by check or money order will expedite your order.

We will take all other drivers license issuance (except permits- see below), including Commercial Drivers License (CDL) and those who have a change of name or address BY APPOINTMENT ONLY.

This is NOT for permit testing. Permit testers must make an appointment with KSP, below. Masks will be REQUIRED to enter, by order of the Governor and Supreme Court.

State Police are giving both the road tests and permit tests. You MUST have an appointment with the State Police to take either test.

We have set aside times during the testing days just for you. Circuit Clerk services for driver testing are available at the Independence office only.

REAL ID UPDATE The KY Transportation Cabinet has opened a regional office in Burlington to issue REAL ID licenses.

Residents from ANY county may apply for a REAL ID or standard credential in Burlington if they do not require testing or retesting. The office is located at 6159 1st Financial Drive Burlington, KY 41005 (not the Circuit Clerk’s office) . Call 502-564-1257 with any questions. The office is open Monday-Friday between 8 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. (only debit and credit cards are accepted for payment).

The Circuit Clerk’s office will continue to issue standard licenses and ID credentials that will be acceptable for domestic travel and admittance into military bases and restricted federal buildings until October 2021.

A passport is an acceptable form of identification for all the above and IS required for international travel.
